THE VILJOENS MARCH 2022

March 2022 update from Dale and Karen Viljoen,
ministering in Sapporo, Japan

"We are co-heirs with Christ and join Him as co-labourers in the great co-mission to tell and show our friends in Japan God's redemption story (through Jesus) and how it applies to them today."

We sincerely apologize for the lack of general updates and unanswered emails these past 6-7 months! Covid-19 has kept us on our toes and stopped volunteers coming in to help with the Café and English program at COEN.

Total FOCUS was the only way we could keep on functioning and surviving. Thank you for your patience with us, including your amazing prayer and support!
The Japanese "blue colour" business tax system is constantly changing. Doing these taxes in Japanese is time consuming and mentally challenging. Dale finally managed to submit these taxes just in time this March!
Although the snow is melting slowly (we had a LOT of snow this year!), we feel a "spring" in our hearts: we reopened the Café again March 1st (after a six-week Covid closure), and are preparing to welcome three volunteers from the USA who have just received their visas!
Karissa Heslep is coming to help in the Café for a year through OMF's Serve Asia program.

Zac and Allison Nance with 8-year old Kayla (and Grace her cat) are with Links International, and will help Dale with the business side of COEN.

Another arrival: Grand-daughter Ava was born to Stephen and Mea on January 31st! Dale now needs to start acting his age!

We say goodbye to COEN Bible Community connected Keith and Celia Olson this month. Keith led the Bible studies in the Café on Tuesdays,  helped with Sunday preaching and teaching, and was a helpful handyman. Celia introduced the Japanese tea ceremony to the group and transformed the liturgy.

In March, nine of us got together to celebrate over a meal a total of 312 years of ministry in Japan. Seven will be retiring in 2022; we will continue on for a few more years. (Currently Dale arrived in Japan 43 years ago in March; Karen has been in Japan for 30 years.)

Praise and Prayer

Praise
  • God continues to provide for the finances of the Café.
  • The Lord continues to protect us and the Café from COVID-19.
  • 2021 COEN business taxes have been submitted.
  • The volunteers who have waited for 18 months to enter Japan are arriving in April.
  • First grand-daughter Ava was safely born.
  • Eight people are digging into the Bible.
  • Our OMF support was 100% the end of 2021.
  • We celebrate a full three years at COEN, and are grateful for the "spring" that we believe Jesus is giving us as we look to the next three years.
Pray
  • For an apartment to be found for the Nance family, and for the Nances and Karissa to settle well into life in Sapporo.
  • We need a replacement volunteer English teacher.
  • For rest and refreshment for us, including co-worker Hiromi.
  • May we be a blessing to all of those with whom we come into contact - as light and salt, revealing Jesus' love.
  • For the COEN Bible Community to grow in faith and love (and numbers).
  • The Nishiokas continue to need prayer. Mr Nishioka is receiving daily home nursing; Mrs Nishioka is a little weaker.

We would not be able to minister in Japan without your prayer backing, support, encouragement and friendship. Thank you!

Please let us know how we can pray for you, too!
