September 2020 update from Dale and Karen Viljoen,
ministering in Sapporo, Japan
This world is not our permanent home;
we are looking forward to a home yet to come.
Therefore, let us offer to Jesus
a continual sacrifice of praise to God,
proclaiming our allegiance to his name.
And don't forget to do good
and share with those in need.
These are the sacrifices that please God.

Hebrews 13:14-16 (NLT)

We continue to be amazed at how God is working in and through Café COEN! Each day surprises us with the deep and joyful conversations that are taking place.

Most of the Café's "usual" customers have returned, and many new customers have found us through watching the TV program that aired in March.

Mrs Nishioka

When Mrs Nishioka believed in Jesus about 38 years ago in Nagayama (Asahikawa), her husband was not at all pleased. Dale encouraged her (and those of you who were receiving Dale's prayer-letter) to keep on praying.
After her husband's transfer to Hakodate, Mrs Nishioka was again a member of the church Dale was planting (Hope Church. Her husband continued to push Jesus away.

What a joy it was to have fellowship with Mr and Mrs Nishioka at Café COEN! (Photo: 2020 July 22) Mr Nishioka is now serving Jesus as one of the prominent members of a Sapporo church. God is faithful!

Please pray for this couple: Mrs Nishioka has a progressive muscular illness, and her husband is in remission after a four-year struggle with cancer.
Evelyn was the last short term worker at Café COEN due to COVID-19.
We need short-term help, both in the Café and teaching English.
We are glad for Keiko's help in the Café, one day a week!
Karen is doing a great job as Café Manager!

Older People in Japan

Japan has the highest number of people over 65 in the world. (Some of these people spend up to five hours at a time at Café COEN.) This has implications for the Japanese medical, pension and welfare systems. It also frees up workers to serve each other, think about the "Good News" and take part in various social activities.

In September, Dale increased the number of "older people" in Japan by one!

Praise and Prayer

Praise
  • For the excellent atmosphere in the Café, for the increased number of customers and the depth of conversations we can have.
  • The Lord has protected us from COVID-19.
  • Thank you, Lord, for the Nishioka family.
  • For the provision of 83% of our OMF support budget.
Pray
  • For diligence as we disinfect surfaces, take temperatures, try to practice distancing (difficult in a Café!), and look out for each other.
  • Café Manager, Karen, needs ongoing energy and freshness, especially with little outside help.
  • May we be a blessing to all of those with whom we come into contact - as light and salt, revealing Jesus' love.
  • For the COEN Bible Community to grow in faith and love (and numbers!).
  • For the Nishiokas and their health needs.
  • That Dale will be able to focus and thrive despite ongoing busyness.
  • We are looking to God to allow a "ready to come" Australian teacher to enter Japan to serve with us for a year.
  • Co-worker and English teacher Hiromi has a hefty teaching load. Please pray for her and her parents in Hakodate. Her father, Takefumi, has health issues. Her mother, Masako, is concerned about her husband. Both parents (in their 80s) do not yet know Jesus.
  • For our support to  reach 100%
  • For God to work mightily among older people in Japan.
  • For continued refreshment and spiritual freshness for us.
We would not be able to minister in Japan without your prayer backing, support, encouragement and friendship. Thank you!

Please let us know how we can pray for you, too!
