Call to Prayer                                                                                 June 2020

Dear prayer partners,

These days have unexpectedly become very busy days. We praise God for the number of new areas of ministry that has opened up for us during this ‘lockdown’ time.
  1. We have started a WhatsApp prayer group for our ministry. This is a broadcast group, which means only we can put prayer items on the group, no responses will be possible. So, if you join the group you will only receive our prayer needs. Nobody else can bombard the group with all sorts of comments and pictures etc. If you do want to respond to a prayer need, I then need to send us a private message, this will not appear in the group at all.  PLEASE consider joining up, simply find “Henry & Sonia prayer” and add yourself, if that does not work send us your mobile number and we will add your number to the group.
  2. We have made a 5-minute video to talk a little bit about our ministry and work in Europe thus far. We have made this so you can show it in a church service via ZOOM or you tube. Henry & Sonia Ministry video Below are the correct links for our 5-minute ministry update https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yy05S9wHIOY&t=3s. We are very aware that as missionaries on home assignment we are not able to visit our supporters, church and friends, so this is a very inadequate alternative. We do look forward to the day when we can come and visit and meet face to face again.
  3. During this lockdown time, we have become very involved at Plumstead Baptist Church helping with setting up online Bible studies, prayer meeting and Sunday services. This has been a busy blessed learning curve for us, but a great joy. On Wednesday evenings I share leading a Bible study with Nick tackling Revelation. Much discussion and learning going on. I have really enjoyed getting deeply involved in researching and preparing the Bibles studies. I have also started preaching through the Gospel of John on Sunday morning. Again, getting back into ‘pastoral’ mode of preparing weekly messages and interacting with people on a pastoral level has been a great privilege. Our videos are not the greatest productions, but I think they are clear, should you be interested in to watch some of them. One area we are really struggling with is getting good sound playing over Zoom so people can sing along or meditate while listening to the music and reading the words. All these things are new learning experiences which we are enjoying and finding fulfilling. Bible studies and sermons. The link to the video's on Bible studies on Revelation and sermons on John that we have been doing at Plumstead Baptist Church. https://www.youtube.com/feed/my_videos
  4. During this time the local Community Action Network contact us and asked if they could use the church building as a distribution point for food parcels to needy families in the Plumstead and Diepriver area. A small team of church members got involved in helping set up, distribute and clean-up with the food parcels. Contacts made and follow-up visitation revealed to us that we have about 40 destitute migrant families living within a 1 km radius of the church building. This led to more ministry opportunities with migrants, not in Europe for us this time, but locally. I was able to share some of the insights we gained in Europe. We are also looking at the possibility of doing some ongoing training on migrant ministry, from all the experience and training we got in Europe so far.
  5. A matter of grave concern is that as we started moving among these very vulnerable migrants we saw some indicators that may indicate some level of human trafficking or exploitation. In general, the more vulnerable people become, human traffickers, thrive and are able to take advantage of those people, to manipulate them for evil. Please pray for us as we try to help these very vulnerable people.
  6. On Sunday the 21st June, we opened the church for a service and had 12 of the migrants/refugees attend. It was a cold and rainy day in Cape Town so some may not have wanted to walk to church in the rain. On Thursday and Friday the 25 & 26th June, we will be involved in helping to distribute food parcels again.
  7. Please pray for our protection from the COVID 19 virus. Sonia has been in isolation for most of this time, which means I end up having to also go out often for shopping.
Thank you for your support and ongoing prayers. Currently, our support level for the year is on 62% of the required level. Please pray with us that God would provide. Officially we have been recalled from field service until we have increased our support level. We do trust in the providence of God, knowing that our future is in His hands. In times like this, I am always reminded of Hudson Taylor's response, God's work, done Gods way will receive Gods support. An absolute belief in God's provision and guidance.

Yours in Royal Service

Henry & Sonia
