May 2020 update from Dale and Karen Viljoen,
ministering in Sapporo, Japan
Always be joyful.
Keep on praying.
No matter what happens, always be thankful,
for this is God's will for you who belong to Christ Jesus.

1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 (NLT)
We are grateful that we can join together in prayer with you around the world. So many are suffering, fearful, yet courageous. Daily, the Lord lays some of you on our hearts for prayer, and for thankfulness. Thank you for upholding us, too, in prayer.

Sapporo is seeing a second surge of COVID-19. As of today (May 8), Hokkaido has 928 cases. The hospital that Dale goes to every three months to see his heart doctor has become a "cluster" with 79 cases, many of these health workers. Dale was overwhelmed by the kindness of a nurse there who enabled him to get his usual medication remotely last week.
What about our ministry?
The Café has been closed since April 7th and we have decided to keep it closed until the end of June. About 70% of our regulars are over the age of 65 and often stay in the Café for many hours, increasing the risk of infection. English Classes
After a gap of two and a half months, we will restart teaching English classes - this time online, from May 11th. Quite a learning curve! Of course, not everyone wants to study English conversation this way, so we look forward to seeing some of our friends in July, face-to-face.

The Bible Community
Since last Sunday, all of our 12 or so worshippers"are on LINE, audio only, with our microphones off. Again, a new experience trying to lead a worshipful and meaningful service with no immediate feedback!
Praise and Prayer
  • In April we were just able to get away from Sapporo and our apartment (work stations) for a 10 day break, the first in 13 months.
  • The Lord has provided for us to able to pay the rent for the Café and cover other costs for May! Praise Jesus for generous supporters.
  • Although parks are closed we can still see the cherry blossoms and the birds.
  • We will be able to continue to connect with our "congregation" online - English and the Bible Community.
  • For the medical community - we know many doctors and nurses.
  • May we be a blessing to all of those we come into "contact" - as light and salt, revealing Jesus' love.
  • For understanding of the tricks and techniques of online teaching and preaching.
  • That we will be able to continue to meet the financial demands of COEN Life at this critical time. (About 430,000 yen a month.)
  • That Dale will be able to get a better understanding of possible financial help through the Japanese system, and also be able to apply for this help.
  • For continued refreshment and spiritual freshness for us (last year was extremely busy).
We would not be able to minister in Japan without your prayer backing, support, encouragement and friendship. Thank you!

Please let us know how we can pray for you, too!
